The Story Behind Sofa Sleuths
This small, independent UK-based hobby project was born from one simple, stubborn question that’s nagged at me for decades: why do treasure hunts always have to mean leaving the house?
I’m 62 now, and I’ve been hooked on puzzles and mysteries since I was a boy. In the 1960s and 70s, I devoured every Enid Blyton book I could borrow from the library — Famous Five, Secret Seven, all those glorious tales of children outsmarting villains in old houses and secret coves.
But the stories that really lit a fire in me were the great detective classics: Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, pipe in hand, solving the impossible from his armchair at 221B Baker Street; Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, quietly observing, asking deceptively simple questions, and unveiling the truth in a single devastating paragraph.
Those tales weren’t about running around — they were about thinking, noticing, connecting dots no one else could see. That slow build of clues, the sudden flash of understanding… it never left me.
Life moved on — work, family, responsibilities — and the years slipped by. I still loved a good mystery, still kept shelves full of Christie paperbacks and Doyle collections, but the treasure hunts and puzzle games I encountered later always demanded physical effort: driving to locations, walking muddy paths, battling the weather. My knees aren’t what they used to be, and these days I’d much rather stay indoors with a cup of tea than chase clues across fields.
So a few years ago, I started wondering: what if the entire adventure could happen from the sofa? What if you could feel like Sherlock settling into his chair with a seven percent solution, or Poirot exercising his little grey cells, without ever needing to step outside? No expensive equipment, no weather worries, no long journeys — just clever cryptic clues leading to a real secret British location, solved through research, deduction, local knowledge, or sheer stubborn cleverness.
That’s how Sofa Sleuths came into being. It’s still just me — one 62-year-old puzzle enthusiast with a day job behind me, a laptop in front of me, and a lifelong love of detective stories and brain-teasers. No company, no investors, no marketing team — just real hunts, real cash prizes paid promptly via PayPal, and real people having fun solving them from home.

The format is simple yet addictive: Three carefully layered cryptic clues lead to one real, secret British location — perhaps a forgotten castle ruin, a quiet historical marker in a village, or an overlooked gem hidden in plain sight.
You solve them entirely from your armchair, using online research, old maps, local knowledge, a bit of deduction, or just the quiet cleverness that Poirot or Miss Marple would admire — no walking boots, no train tickets, no need to leave the house at all.
The first person to correctly name the exact location wins the cash prize. Everything is 100% skill-based — no random draws, no luck involved — and completely transparent from start to finish.
It’s the same quiet thrill I remember from reading Sherlock Holmes by lamplight: observing the details, making connections, and feeling that wonderful moment when the last piece falls into place — except now anyone can experience it without ever leaving their favourite chair.

It’s just me — a regular UK puzzle fanatic with a full-time job, a shelf groaning under mystery novels and code-breaking books, and a long-standing dream to create something small but meaningful for fellow enthusiasts.
I’m not a company, I’m not backed by venture capital, and I don’t have a marketing department. Sofa Sleuths is a genuine hobby project: I design the clues, run the Facebook group, send the emails, judge the entries, pay the prizes, and answer messages myself.
Everything is done openly and honestly: winners are announced publicly (anonymised for privacy), payouts happen quickly via PayPal with proof shared in the group, and full rules, FAQ, and privacy details are always easy to find.
I want this to feel personal and trustworthy — because that’s how I’d want to play if I were entering.
